Whenever you move into a new home, you will learn things about it over the first few years living there. In our case, our homeowner, Judy, had just purchased this home a few years ago. When she purchased the house, she knew the furnace was old and would need to be replaced eventually, but she wanted to see how it functioned the first year.
What she discovered was that her main family room, as well as her bedroom were additions to the home, and neither got much heat in the winter.
Problem: There was no heat for these additions in the winter, and the heating system was old and inefficient.
Solution: We installed a multi-zone Daikin VRV Life system that heated and cooled the entire home, and installed solar panels to improve energy efficiency.
When Judy took a look around the bedroom and family room, she knew they were both additions. What she also discovered was that there were no vents or ducts leading to the rooms.
Judy talked to a friend and decided to call in an HVAC contractor who could help. Luckily for us, her friend recommended Compass Heating and Air Conditioning. Mike went out to talk to Judy, and assess her situation.
After taking a look, she was exactly right. Her furnace was old and needed to be replaced, and she also had no ductwork leading to these rooms. This means that even if the furnace is upgraded to a brand new, state of the art system, it still wouldn’t help these additions get any warmer in the winter.
Luckily, Mike had a solution for this situation.

After Mike took a look around, he knew that a Daikin VRV Life multi-zone system would be perfect for this home, for a few reasons. A VRV Life System can combine a furnace with a heat pump and ductless mini splits. When the weather isn’t too cold, the furnace isn’t needed, but if it drops below a certain temperature, the furnace kicks on and enhances the heat.
The Daikin VRV Life system is also able to heat and cool your home in different zones, and doesn’t require any ductwork for your mini splits. You simply run some small tubing from the heat pump outside to the air handler on the wall inside. This makes the system perfect for additions, and homes that simply need a supplement to their current system.

Judy loved the idea of being able to heat the different zones of her home independently. She didn’t need to waste energy heating the entire home to the same temperature, because she didn’t use the additions very much.
She wanted the family room and bedroom to be warmer when needed, but truthfully, she didn’t use either room very much, and heating them to the optimal temperature all of the time would be a waste of energy and money.
With the zoned system, she could have her additions remaining luke warm, until she wanted to use them, and then could turn the heat up on her mini split. This was a perfect solution to make sure the rooms could be comfortable, while not having to add ductwork or waste energy.

Using a heat pump was also something that interested Judy, and made her choose this solution offered by Mike and Compass. Heat pumps are energy efficient, and a great way to heat and cool your home. Other heating solutions, like a stand alone furnace, only offer heating, and usually run less efficiently. The VRV system lets you use your furnace only when needed, and the heat pump does the work the majority of the time.
Conserving energy is a big point of emphasis today. Judy wanted to go as green as possible, and decided to also add solar panels to the roof of her home. Since the Daikin system runs off of electricity primarily, this was a perfect time to install them. Before when she only had a gas furnace, it didn’t make as much sense.
Now she is able to use electricity gathered from her solar panels in the winter and in the summer to keep her home comfortable. This not only conserves energy, but it also lowers her energy bills for the foreseeable future.
